It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Alright, so it is about time that we are taking our own advice and making the time to be more Web 2.0. One thing you will found about us is that we believe in staying up on the latest trends within our industry. Now these trends aren’t always applicable to our environment at the time, but sooner or later our environment catches up. Recently Emily and myself attended a Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco.

First of all the Web 2.0 conference is a high tech conference based on the internet world. Standard companies like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft and cutting edge companies like Dogster attend the conference and are speakers.

So, what did we learn? We learned the most cutting edge information on Content Strategies, Using Analytics (how people get to your site and what they do once they are there), Identify Users of Your Site, Accessibility for the Disabled, and of course using Social Media to increase your marketing efforts.

We learned so much that I am going to blog about these different topics in everyday terms that you can digest and see how they fit into your business.

Here’s a question to ponder for next time. What is Web 2.0?

Most of our website clients come to us after they have already had a bad experience. There are several different types of experiences but for today I just want to clear up some confusion about the fees you may encounter.

Here are some things that you may need to pay for associated with your website:

Domain Name – This is typically an annual fee and is your website address.

Hosting – This can be paid monthly or annually and often includes web statistics, email accounts, and space to put your website files.

SSL – If you have an ecommerce site you will need to purchase and SSL Certificate, this provides security on your website when payment information is being transferred.

Design & Development – this refers to the actual look of the site and the building of the website.

In our past experience many of clients come to us unsure of what they have purchased and not knowing what fees are next. This can be frustrating, especially when they come to us from another web company and these fees have not been explained. Be sure when hiring a company that you actually sign a contract that spells out who is responsible for what fees, also be sure that the domain name and hosting accounts are put into your name as the owner of the site. This will ensure no matter what choices you make in the future that you will own your domain name. Also be sure that you own your website files you have paid for these through the Design & Development fees.
